Nature of Work Thisposition will function as an American Sign Language Interpreter for the UCCScampus. Initial responsibilities willinclude the provision of ASL interpretation in the ASL program in theDepartment of Languages and Culture, and ASL interpretation for staff inFacilities Services in support of their positions. This is a 75% appointment which exists toprovide the highest quality interpreting services for American Sign Languagefaculty and staff and deaf or hard of hearing employees in a variety of situationswithin the university. Examples of WorkPerformed In Human Resources * Manageinterpreting schedule in a manner that serves the campus efficiently * Identifyscheduling conflict and provide recommended solutions * Serveas the lead on HR policies, such as Disability Access and Accommodation InForeign Languages * Interpretationfor upper-division culture and literature courses taught in English. These courses are available to non-signersand do not have ASL language pre-requisites. Some are or are being proposed to meet College and Campus Curriculumrequirements * Interpretationfor meetings with students to discuss issues regarding grades, class standingand other necessary requirements with an interpreter present to ensureunderstanding * Mentoringadvanced student TAs and interns. Theprogram, like all languages in the department, offers opportunities to assistin lower level courses and to do teaching internships in those courses toadvanced students interested in teaching, translation and interpretation. As these activities often involve voicing,mentoring by a professional in the field is essential * Provideinterpretation to facilitate integration of the ASL faculty into the life ofthe department, the college, the university and the community * Provideinterpretation that would facilitate access by the campus and community to theofferings, opportunities and culture of the ASL program and faculty. In Facilities Services * Interpretationduring regularly scheduled staff meetings * Interpretationduring campus events attended by Facilities Services staff Knowledge, Skills, andAbilities * Workingknowledge of higher educationalsettings/environments * Demonstratedknowledge of Deaf culture and communication styles * Knowledge/ familiarity with the role of the professional interpreter, and RID's Code ofProfessional Conduct * Knowledgeof Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), specifically as it applies to Deaf/HHindividuals. * Knowledgeof educational programs and the lexicon of advanced university level courses. * StrongSign-to-Voice skills. Excellence in reception and voicing in the universitycontext. * Knowledgeof and ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements ofthe position; ability to effectively utilize a variety of computer softwareapplications, which may include but are not limited to e-mail, Internet, wordprocessing, electronic calendar, presentation development, spreadsheet,database, etc.; willingness to stay current and develop skills as needed * Abilityto be flexible, particularly in relation to weekly scheduling of interpretingassignments; occasional evening / weekend work required. * Abilityto communicate and work effectively with a variety of interpreting servicesconsumers * Abilityto respond effectively and positively to feedback. * Abilityto work cooperatively with others and to participate effectively in a teamsetting * Strong,positive interpersonal skills and leadership skills. For the purposes of FLSA this position hasbeen determined to be exempt from (not eligible for) overtime under FLSA. Minimum Requirements * One of the followingcertifications is required: * RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf)Certification - CI and CT (Certified Interpreter and Certified Transliterator) * National Interpreter Certification (NIC) * Board for Evaluation of Interpreters - Level IIIor higher * Five(5) years of diverse interpreting experience * Proficiencyin American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced Plus or better skill level asdemonstrated by an appropriate assessment tool. Preferred * Formalinterpreter training, coursework in Deaf Education * Holdor be eligible for (and willing/able to obtain) Educational Interpreter (EI)Authorization in the State of ColoradoSDL2017
